Over the years many companies have tried to build Pet Screen Door that were strong enough to stand up to speeding Dobermans and retrievers. One company built a screen door that was entirely made of stainless steel. Strong enough but way too expensive.

There is a limit to how strong you can build a screen door. There’s no point in building it stronger than the patio door frame it’s installed in. To build a pet screen door you need a frame that won’t fall apart if it gets struck by a speeding dog, (or human). You want metal rollers that won’t break when the door gets hit. Ideally, you just want the whole screen door to jump out of its frame rather than breaking.

Nowadays with pet screen cloth, we don’t need to use stainless steel and other far more expensive metal screening materials. The only problem with pet screen is that a big dog can still push the whole cloth and the spline right out of the screen door frame. To make a strong screen door you need a stronger way of holding the pet screen cloth in.

One easy way to do this is to screw a long strip of aluminum 1/16″ inch thick by 3/4″ wide over top of the spline groove, to prevent the spline and the cloth from being forced out. You will need to put screws spaced every 3 inches or so to provide constant pressure around the frame. This may not look the nicest, but it will make your screen door very strong.

Some companies get around the need to put many screws by using a metal spline forced in using a hydraulic ram in the shop. This is very secure but if you ever do need to change the screen cloth, you won’t be able to do it yourself. And very few glass shops have hydraulic rams or metal spline for that matter. So maintenance may become a problem.

This includes jumping on the kitchen counter or even jumping onto the coffee table in a bid to get to the window. If you want to keep the cat out of a particular room for some time, just lock the cat door. Whippets with their short coats and very little body fat have no protection against the cold. It would be cruel and dangerous to leave our little hounds out in extreme weather.

So, if you need to leave your pet at home while you are at work, you will be faced with a dilemma: let your whippet outside to freeze or leave him inside and find a soiled house upon your return.

Crate training can help but no dog can stay in his crate for too many consecutive hours.

It is unrealistic and unfair to expect your dog to wait for a full working day to relive him. Giving no alternative means to force your whippet to soil the house or the crate. Messing inside can quickly becomes a habit very difficult to break.

At this point house training will become very difficult or impossible and you’ll find yourself with an unmanageable pet.

Punishment? Go ahead, punish yourself because you are the only one responsible for the problem.

A Dog Door between a restricted area inside the house and a fenced area outside, like a small garden or a balcony is the best solution to this situation.

Most modern doggy doors can be locked when necessary and are efficient enough to keep the cold out.

A medium size door is enough for a whippet to get through but not big enough for intruders to get in.

Your whippet will easily learn to use the door with a little training.

First entice your pet with food while keeping the door open. Then, when he becomes more confident let him test the door while leaving food on the other side. Reward verbally when he tries to get through and praise enthusiastically when he finally succeeds.

Pet Door

Owning a pet is a huge commitment, especially if you work full or part time and have to dash home when you can to allow your pet to go outside.

At some point you would have been annoyed of frustrated with your pet because you have just sat down and got comfortable and your pet is at your feet wining to go out

The answer to these problems is simple – a pet door, owning a pet door will not only allow your pet to have the freedom of coming in and out side as and when she pleases it will also protect your walls, carpets, floors and furniture from the scratching pets sometimes do when they want to go outside.

The best way to determine what pet door suits you is to measure your pets height and width, this will give you the right measurements to need to purchase a pet door that your pet can actually fit through. You will also need to know the thickness of the door that it will be attached to. Armed with this information you won’t go wrong.

Installation of a pet door can sometimes be tricky, all pet doors should come with full installation instructions and it is important to follow the steps properly. Alternatively if this is something that you do find difficult then you could always get someone in to for the door for you. This should not take long and should not be too expensive.

There are many types of pet doors available that vary in size, shape, colour and price, most people think of a flap type door when thinking of a pet door, however the electronic pet door is becoming more and more popular.

Some of the advantages of having an electronic pet door are as follows -

• An electronic pet door is operated by a signal that comes from your pets collar, this means the door will only open for your pet, this will stop other animals and strays from entering your home.
• Because the electronic pet door only opens when your pet sets off the signal it will remain closed unlike a flap door, this will reduce loss of heating or air conditioning.
• An electronic pet door is considered safer than a flap, anyone can push things through a flap door where as an electronic pet door will remain sealed and closed.

Once you have researched and installed your pet door you will need to encourage your pet to actually use it, as will all new things your pet probably won’t understand what it is for at first. Never push your pet through the pet door to show her how it works, this could scare your pet and they may never use it again Try to gently encourage your pet to go through, stand the other side with a treat and gently persuade her to come through, be patient, they may not go through for a while and it is important not to put them off.

When your pet finally does go thought the pet door, remember to reward them and make it fun, this way your pet will be happy to use the door and you can both enjoy the benefits.
