Over the years many companies have tried to build Pet Screen Door that were strong enough to stand up to speeding Dobermans and retrievers. One company built a screen door that was entirely made of stainless steel. Strong enough but way too expensive.

There is a limit to how strong you can build a screen door. There’s no point in building it stronger than the patio door frame it’s installed in. To build a pet screen door you need a frame that won’t fall apart if it gets struck by a speeding dog, (or human). You want metal rollers that won’t break when the door gets hit. Ideally, you just want the whole screen door to jump out of its frame rather than breaking.

Nowadays with pet screen cloth, we don’t need to use stainless steel and other far more expensive metal screening materials. The only problem with pet screen is that a big dog can still push the whole cloth and the spline right out of the screen door frame. To make a strong screen door you need a stronger way of holding the pet screen cloth in.

One easy way to do this is to screw a long strip of aluminum 1/16″ inch thick by 3/4″ wide over top of the spline groove, to prevent the spline and the cloth from being forced out. You will need to put screws spaced every 3 inches or so to provide constant pressure around the frame. This may not look the nicest, but it will make your screen door very strong.

Some companies get around the need to put many screws by using a metal spline forced in using a hydraulic ram in the shop. This is very secure but if you ever do need to change the screen cloth, you won’t be able to do it yourself. And very few glass shops have hydraulic rams or metal spline for that matter. So maintenance may become a problem.

It may be surprising to know all the uses you could put a dog door to, even if you don’t have dogs. If you have a pet cat, the dog door can also be used by that. This is also convenient if you have a small dog or a pup – so the same sized door can be used by both. Usually owners install dog doors for dogs but rarely bother to do the same for cats.

Cats are usually looked at as house pets, or to be precise, lazy house pets that would rather not go out. However, getting your cat to do some exercise is a good idea as most have a tendency to grow fat and lazy very quickly. At such times having a cat door to shoo it out of the house and letting it in when it wants can be a great idea. And if your cat is the outdoor type, it will definitely appreciate the quick access to safety when it gets into trouble.

Dog doors for cats can be replaced by a think film of vinyl or strong plastic that is easy for the cat to push its way through. Cats generally tend to use their claws on anything that might seem like a deterring factor, so it is best to have a flap on the door which will open easily even without any pawing. Otherwise you might find the lovely finish of thermo vinyl or aluminum badly scratched! Another mistake is installing wire mead or a net of any sort. Cats can very easily tear through most.

Dog doors for cats are useful in another way as well. Cats are known to go to extreme lengths to get things they want. A cat wanting to get out of the house will resort to extreme measures in the absence of a dog or Cat Door. This includes jumping on the kitchen counter or even jumping onto the coffee table in a bid to get to the window. All this jumping and the resulting destruction of (often expensive) property can be put to an end with a cat door.

Dog doors for cats can be installed on all the doors of the house, not just the front or main door. This allows your cat access to all the rooms so it can roam about freely. If you want to keep the cat out of a particular room for some time, just lock the cat door. Dog doors for cats come with a variety of locking systems and you will definitely find one to suit your purpose.

A house is quite large and a cat quite small. Therefore it is quite easy for it to get lost in one of the rooms. Consequently, you might find the idea of having cat doors all over the house a little unnerving. However, the idea is to give your pet freedom. Cats are inquisitive creatures and like to snoop around. Keep them cooped up in a room and they will soon become lazy, fat and very boring. A cat that can roam about the house is far more interesting. If you’re worried about losing it, tie a little bell around its neck. That way you’ll here your cat every time it runs through a cat door.

Whippets with their short coats and very little body fat have no protection against the cold. It would be cruel and dangerous to leave our little hounds out in extreme weather.

By another hand, although your whippet will do his best to make you forget, even he will eventually need to venture out for his bodily functions.

So, if you need to leave your pet at home while you are at work, you will be faced with a dilemma: let your whippet outside to freeze or leave him inside and find a soiled house upon your return.

Crate training can help but no dog can stay in his crate for too many consecutive hours.

It is unrealistic and unfair to expect your dog to wait for a full working day to relive him. Giving no alternative means to force your whippet to soil the house or the crate. Messing inside can quickly becomes a habit very difficult to break.

At this point house training will become very difficult or impossible and you’ll find yourself with an unmanageable pet.

Punishment? Go ahead, punish yourself because you are the only one responsible for the problem.

A Dog Door between a restricted area inside the house and a fenced area outside, like a small garden or a balcony is the best solution to this situation.

Most modern doggy doors can be locked when necessary and are efficient enough to keep the cold out.

A medium size door is enough for a whippet to get through but not big enough for intruders to get in.

Your whippet will easily learn to use the door with a little training.

First entice your pet with food while keeping the door open. Then, when he becomes more confident let him test the door while leaving food on the other side. Reward verbally when he tries to get through and praise enthusiastically when he finally succeeds.

Congratulations, you set the basis for an easy and enjoyable life with your whippet!

When it comes to the flexibility of allowing your pet to enjoy the great outdoors, Patio Pet Doors make a convenient addition to any house. With a variety of styles, shapes, sizes and features, many consumers like the fuss-free installation that comes with the majority of models. Generally speaking, they cater to the needs of both the pet and the owner, as the hassle of constantly opening a door to the back yard for cats and dogs is eliminated, which saves time and effort.

In order to choose a pet door that will fit the correct dimensions of a home (as well as personal preferences), it is important to recognize a variety of factors that come into play. A consumer will face a few decisions in regards to the acquisition of a pet door. One of the most important things to consider is to find out the measurements to ensure the proper door is delivered. In addition to the height and length of the door, many other considerations exist. For example, the type of panels and panes becomes an issue. One may choose between dual pane panels, the less costly single pane glass panels, electronic panels and patio panels set aside for cats. There are also insulated options found in dual pane glass doors, which usually provides the best environment for saving effort. To test the type of glass associated with your patio pet door – open the slider and place your fingers on both sides of the glass. Single pane glass looks like that they are touching, while a dual pane glass places fingers about ½” apart.

Patio pet doors require either a temporary or semi-permanent installation, which often means whether or not tools are needed in the process. With a semi-permanent patio pet door, you may have to use hacksaws, drills and wrenches to make sure the patio panel is in place. Temporary models allow the panel pet door to be removed at the homeowner’s pleasure. For example, the panel can be used during warm days only. When the weather turns cold, the panel can be conveniently and quickly removed, whereas a semi-permanent option is attached into the track with sheet metal screws.

Another issue to consider is the ‘rise’ of the patio pet doors, which shows the height of the flap that pets will enter and exit through. Keep in mind that a German Shepherd and a Pomeranian will not use the same rise so it is not necessary to purchase the biggest flaps in all cases. To gain more flexibility over this aspect, purchasing one with a user-adjustable rise is recommended.

The installation of patio pet doors is quite fuss-free, as most people simply install the panel against the sliding door jamb. Others may choose an outside screen track, which utilizes a ‘spring-load’ type of mechanism. The median costs of them include $120 for a small single panel; $325 for a medium dual pane insulated glass; $120 for the smaller specialized cat flap panel; and $260 for a small electronic door.

Benefits

Patio pet doors allow a pet to enter the comfort of their home when they feel scared or to hide from the chill when a change in weather arises. The freedom associated with this type of product is great for both the pet and pet owner. They also blend with the majority of patios with attractive colors, such as white, bronze, black and aluminum satin. The convenience of a pet patio door continues, as fuss-free installation eliminates the need for professional assistance.

Disadvantages

Some consumers are worried about them because they fear issues such as pests getting into the home or reduced security. However, purchasing a Universal Bug Seal covers the openings that insects may find. Security can be improved by installing locks or using a dead-bolt lock or pin lock that melds the glass door to the pet door.

Cat doors keep your cat happy and content. They allow him or her to roam free whenever he or she wants. That is treasure to a cat! Cats enjoy their territory including the inside outside of the house. The cat door will allow him the freedom to use that territory and generally have a more happy life. The door will enable your cat to access both inside and outside areas freely. Your cat has the freedom to go out when he wants but also come inside for warmth, love, and food.

Your life a little easier too. No longer do you have to open the door to let your cat out or in. No more noises from outside or in!

Cat doors provide a way of allowing your cat to escape other things – people and other animals. It gives him freedom and privacy. Having a cat door installed in your home will prevent the larger dog from following your cat into his private area as well as keeping him from rummaging through the cat’s litter box.

The usual cat door is made of plastic that flaps down and allows your cat to push on it in order to open it. The flap shut when the cat crosses over and is usually kept lightly closed by a magnet which helps with heat loss.

How do you install a cat door? Several options are available. I have a sliding door that leads to my garden and I put panels into the end of the slider and fixed the pet door into it. You could also use a full screen door that you fix on your main door that has the open flap. You may not be the practical kind of person – in that cases hire someone to do it for you – it shouldn’t take long.

Be aware that your cat may not be the only animal that uses the door. Possums, raccoons, and even stray cats have found their way into many homes through the easy access of a cat door

A Patio Pet Door may be your best pet door solution, if you do not want to make a hole in a wall or door. In addition, there is no need to adjust the sliding glass door frame to install this door. A patio pet door is a handy dog door that frees dog owners from the need to cut, resize, or refit a wall or door.

A patio pet door makes use of a big and transparent pane fitting correctly in the existing patio door outline. This is a flexible pet door, which your dog may use to enter or exit from the house.

Hence, it is possible for you to install a patio dog door to any of the existing doors, as the complete unit fits inside the door, to become a section of the door itself, with a fully mechanical system.

Some advantages of Patio pet doors are:

1. They are easy to install without hampering existing construction.

2. Another advantage is portability, as these doors are removable.

Categories of Patio Dog Doors:

There are two categories of patio pet doors:

1. Temporary Dog Doors

2. Semi-permanent Dog Doors

Temporary Dog Doors

It is easy to install these patio dog doors. You can remove them easily from your patio door frame too. Such doors are useful for dog owners who either does not wish to have a dog door accessible every time or are worried about security when they travel.

Semi-Permanent Dog Doors

These doors come with a lock unit, which fits totally into your patio door frame. You need to screw the door in place. These patio dog doors are also completely removable.

Both these doors, semi-permanent and temporary dog doors come with automatic door lock or manual door lock options. On the other hand, it is vital that the pet door you buy attunes with your dog as well as your patio door frame.

Patio pet doors come in a variety of sizes, since patio doors come in a variety of sizes. Therefore, it is very important for you to measure your patio door from bottom to top and on its track. Also measure the height of your dog before going to purchase the door, as the opening comes in various sizes. A dog should be able to fit through the opening comfortably.

By doing this, you will know the correct height of patio dog door that your door opening can hold. These measurements will also help you to pick a patio pet door with a modifiable height.

You can usually find a Patio Pet Door at your local hardware store or a large home improvement store, such as Home Depot or Lowe’s. You can also search online for more information and sources for your Patio Pet Door.

Owning a pet is a huge commitment, especially if you work full or part time and have to dash home when you can to allow your pet to go outside.

At some point you would have been annoyed of frustrated with your pet because you have just sat down and got comfortable and your pet is at your feet wining to go out

The answer to these problems is simple – a pet door, owning a pet door will not only allow your pet to have the freedom of coming in and out side as and when she pleases it will also protect your walls, carpets, floors and furniture from the scratching pets sometimes do when they want to go outside.

The best way to determine what pet door suits you is to measure your pets height and width, this will give you the right measurements to need to purchase a pet door that your pet can actually fit through. You will also need to know the thickness of the door that it will be attached to. Armed with this information you won’t go wrong.

Installation of a pet door can sometimes be tricky, all pet doors should come with full installation instructions and it is important to follow the steps properly. Alternatively if this is something that you do find difficult then you could always get someone in to for the door for you. This should not take long and should not be too expensive.

There are many types of pet doors available that vary in size, shape, colour and price, most people think of a flap type door when thinking of a pet door, however the electronic pet door is becoming more and more popular.

Some of the advantages of having an electronic pet door are as follows -

An electronic pet door is operated by a signal that comes from your pets collar, this means the door will only open for your pet, this will stop other animals and strays from entering your home.

Because the electronic pet door only opens when your pet sets off the signal it will remain closed unlike a flap door, this will reduce loss of heating or air conditioning.

An electronic pet door is considered safer than a flap, anyone can push things through a flap door where as an electronic pet door will remain sealed and closed.

Once you have researched and installed your pet door you will need to encourage your pet to actually use it, as will all new things your pet probably won’t understand what it is for at first. Never push your pet through the pet door to show her how it works, this could scare your pet and they may never use it again Try to gently encourage your pet to go through, stand the other side with a treat and gently persuade her to come through, be patient, they may not go through for a while and it is important not to put them off.

When your pet finally does go thought the pet door, remember to reward them and make it fun, this way your pet will be happy to use the door and you can both enjoy the benefits.

If you need to buy a Dog Doors then have some fun doing it online. Not only will you find discount prices but you’ll have a huge selection of colors, designs, shapes, sizes and multiple features you haven’t even thought about. You’ll find designs that fit any wall or door with easy install instructions. Finding a dog door couldn’t be much easier than online.

To begin your shopping journey you’ll need to measure your doggie to determine the size you’ll need. Instructions to measuring are on most all sites along with even being able to call if you have additional questions.

Wouldn’t it be great if your dog could open doors? Well, generally speaking they can’t. Therefore freedom and convenience for you and for your dog is right at your finger tips and just a few days away. I don’t know if doggies can think but imagine how we’d feel if we had to ask permission every-time we needed to go potty! Ridiculous, but maybe our little best pet friends would also be happier with the independence that the dog door is going to provide?

We dog owner’s love our dog doors because the flexible, two way panels are safe for any pet. The soft vinyl flap won’t trap or injure tender paws, ears or tails….AND, the permanent magnets assure you of a draft-free, energy efficient closure.

Placing a floor mat on the inside of the dog door is also recommended. A great advantage of having the dog door installed in a wall (instead of a door) is that no one needs to know that you have a dog door. This is important for some people who fear an intruder may crawl through the dog door into your house. However, our guess is that if the dog door is big enough for an intruder to crawl through – he’d be pretty stupid to do it, as he may end up face-to-face with the big dog on the other side of the door! In any event, when you have an in-wall installation.

If you are renting your place of residence, or do not want to cut permanent holes in a wall or door, you can still have a dog door. In this case, you will want to install the dog door in either a sliding glass door, or a regular door. Dog doors that are made for sliding glass doors actually come as a whole panel (patio dog door) that you install in the doorway section; therefore it does not permanently affect your sliding glass doors in any way. Enjoy your little project as your doggie is gonna love you more for it with the new found independence a door dog provides.
