Automatic Pet Food Dispensers and Pet Feeders can be an invaluable resource for the pet owner on the go. In case of travel, work, or vacation, pet feeders can ensure that your pet gets fed right on the ball.

There are 2 categories of pet feeders. Mechanical feeder and automated feeder.

Mechanical feeder is simple pet feeder that is based on the laws of gravity. They are composed of a food storage bin or tower, and a dish. Once the level of food in the dish is below a certain level, more food will fill up the dish from the hopper (storage bin). As such, food is always available to the pet, which can consume as much as it wants to.

Automated feeders can be automatic dishes or automatic food dispensers.

Automatic dishes are composed of covered compartments that the pet owner puts food in. At a preset time, the dish will open one of the compartments, giving the pet access to food.

Automatic food dispensers are, like mechanical dishes, composed of the hopper and the dish. The “automated” section is composed of a timer, and often a measurer. As such measured portions of food are dispensed to the pet at preset times.

The ideal pet feeder should be suited to your pets needs. As such the pet’s size, age, temperament and feeding habits should bear consideration. The number of household pets is also important. You might need a feeder with multiple dishes, or more than one feeder.

Further, the ideal pet feeder should pass some tests in utility. It should be rugged and durable; easy to assemble and use; affordable; easy and affordable to maintain; easy to clean; pet proof (the hopper); spill proof; should have a battery back-up if a plug-in; attractive, unobtrusive and manageable.

A word of caution. These devices cannot substitute for human contact. If you will be away for an extended period of time, pet feeders should be combined with a house or pet sitter, or somebody to check up on the pet.

A shorthair felid, Bombay cat was created in nineteen fifties in United States through crossing of American Shorthairs with Burmese cats. The idea was to creature a small Indian ‘black panther’. After a number of attempts, finally an all black cat was developed that would consistently produce black colored kittens with ‘copper penny’ eyes. It was named ‘Bombay’ after the famous Indian coastal town of the same name. It took a further two decades for the cat to be formally recognized. The modern Bombay Cats shares majority of its attributes with the Burmese since American Shorthairs are no longer used in the periodic out crossing of the breed.

A lithe yet muscular cat, Bombay cats is surprisingly heavy for its appearance. It has a medium slender physique with a shiny coat. Head is well rounded with gold to copper colored circular eyes and slightly tilted ears. Both the eyes and ears are big and widely set. Muzzle is short with a minimal nose break. Legs are long with round paws. Tail is medium in length. The highlighting feature of the Bombay cats is its stunning lustrous coat. It is short and closes lying and yet has an unparalleled shine. It is black throughout, including at its roots. Sable colored kittens are often born in litters, though they are not formally recognized by cat fancies.

Some Bombay cats share a hereditary skull disorder with the Burmese in their lines. The result is an abnormal craniofacial presentation in kittens that are unable to survive and thus have to be euthanized at birth. This is an issue of some controversy around breeders today of the traditional Bombay cats and Burmese cats.

Affectionate and calm, Bombay cats are famous for being total lap cats. They follow their humans around everywhere and try to supervise all their activities. They are outgoing and active cats and keep themselves and their companions busy. Temperamentally they are quite good. Bombay cats readily accept other pets, particularly dogs, into their household. They are cool with children and are social cats in general.

Why would you need a dog car ramp?

Has your dog just had surgery, making it difficult for him to go faster than a walk?

Is your big dog having trouble jumping up into your car, SUV or truck?

Do you need a way for your dog to get into your boat from the dock?

Are you worn out from lifting your dog in and out of your car or boat?

Are you worried you’ll end up injuring yourself?

If you answered yes to any of the above, consider buying or building a ramp. Dog ramps for cars or boats offer a simple solution. Eliminate the guilt and anxiety caused by having to leave your dog at home. With the help of a car dog ramp, you can always bring the dog with you if you choose to!

The most lifting you have to do will be the ramp. A dog car ramp or dog boat ramp is designed to weigh as little as possible, usually 30 lbs or less.

Besides the weight of the ramp, there are three other things to be concerned about:

Will it create a gentle enough slope for my dog?

Will it fit in my car or boat?

How can I afford it?

What Length Ramp Should I Get?

Some dog car ramps are made out of one piece of board or metal 4 to 5 feet long. These shorter ramps can be used for side entry into a vehicle, where the height from the ground is not that great. This type of ramp may be difficult to store in some vehicles and may be best suited for short trips where your dog does not get out of the car. You can leave the ramp at home close to your driveway or in your garage.

Many dog ramps for cars or boats are around 70 inches long or almost 6 feet long, creating a reasonable slope for most dogs to negotiate. If your dog has a lot of difficulty with walking, there are a few extra long ramps that are 7 feet or 84 inches long. These ramps fold up (see below) to make them easy to carry and stow.

Will It Fit In My Vehicle Or Boat?

All the longer ramps are designed to fold up or slide inward (telescope) to at least half their length. That means the folded length is between 35 and 42 inches, which allows these types of ramps to fit in most vehicles or boats. They ramps are fully portable, therefore suitable for longer trips where your dog needs to get in and out away from home. There is also one called a tri-fold that has two folds.

Can I Afford It?

Commercial dog car ramps for bigger dogs tend to cost around USD 100 or more at this time, whether you buy them in a pet store or online. Shipping costs are usually at least USD 25, so even if the ramp costs USD 70, the total is still at least $95.

There is a more affordable option, if you or someone you know has basic woodworking skills. You can build your own! See below for a link to a set of inexpensive folding dog ramp plans.

If you are good at finding recycled or scrap materials, the only thing you may need to buy are the hinges! Many lumber and hardware stores have scrapped wood bins where you can get free plywood and lumber pieces. Often someone buys a sheet of ply board or length of lumber and asks a store clerk to cut it for them. If they do not want the remaining pieces, they are placed in the free bin.

Whatever type of dog car ramp you choose, it is bound to be worth your investment by giving you peace of mind about your dog and your health!

While cleaning may not be anyone’s favorite activity, there is something satisfying about throwing the windows wide open to let in the spring air and giving every room in the house a thorough cleaning to welcome the new season.

Dangers of Chemical-based Household Cleaners

But did you know that many commercial cleaning products can be extremely toxic, and even deadly, to your pets? Cats are especially susceptible since they groom themselves by licking and as a result ingest anything that comes in contact with their feet or fur.

Many household cleaners contain hazardous ingredients such as organic solvents and petroleum based chemicals which can release volatile organic compounds into your indoor air. Some ingredients in household cleaners are known to cause cancer in animals and are suspected human carcinogens. Inappropriate use, storage and disposal of these hazardous household substances may impact your personal health and the health of our environment. Lysol, Pine-sol and other products containing phenols are deadly to cats as they can cause serious liver damage. Chlorox bleach, especially when concentrated, can cause chemical burns when it comes in contact with sensitive pet paws.

Non-toxic Cleaning Products

With the wide variety of naturally based and non-toxic cleaners available, there is no need to continue to use unsafe, toxic products. Brands such as Seventh Generation and Method offer every type of cleaner imaginable and are available in all major grocery stores. If you have cats, try to steer clear of natural products containing essential oils. Even though many manufacturers of essential oils claim that they are safe to use around cats, this is not always the case. Tea tree oil in particular can be deadly to cats.

Some of the safest and least expensive cleaners are baking soda and white distilled vinegar. Some suggestions for use are:

Baking Soda:

Pour a layer in the litter box before adding fresh litter to quell odors.

Add 1/2 cup to the laundry to freshen pet bedding.

Use as an abrasive cleaner for sinks, bowls, and non-porous surfaces.

White Distilled Vinegar:

Use to disinfect feeding dishes, the litter box, and non-porous toys.

Add 1 cup to the wash cycle to freshen and soften pet bedding.

Apply a diluted solution (one part vinegar and one part water) to help remove the appearance and odor of urine stains from carpets.

Baking soda and white vinegar combined make a great non-toxic drain cleaner – pour some baking soda down the drain, follow with a cup or so of vinegar. The mixture will foam, and the foaming action will clear your drain. Repeat if necessary. For tough drains, follow with hot water.

If your pet does come into contact with toxic chemicals, contact the ASPCA’s Animal Poison Control Center at (888) 426-4435 for help.

Not all pet owners allow their pets into the house, even in the winter; but that doesn’t mean the poor dog has to freeze out in the doghouse. Heated Pet Bed are available not only for dogs who have to sleep in a kennel, garage, or basement, but also for those sleeping indoors in colder climates.

Heated pet beds are equipped with thermostats that control the temperature, turning them into a haven of warmth. Dogs will enjoy cuddling deep into their beds even on the coldest nights. Some beds come with optional AC power adapters so that you can heat them even in automobiles. Others feature removable heaters, allowing you to use the beds throughout the year. Heated beds have removable covers made out of washable material. The beds have low power consumption and usually have steel-wrapped cords to prevent dogs from chewing them. Some self-warming beds have reflective surfaces that reflect a pet’s body heat back to it.

Puppies will find heated beds a source of security and warmth, and snuggled into one, will be less likely to feel the estrangement from their mothers. Orthopedic heated dog beds are ideal for older dogs with stiff joints. Designed to provide extra support and comfort, the beds are also good for overweight dogs. Made out of medical grade foam, these beds help reduce stiffness in arthritic dogs and increase their mobility.

Available in various sizes, some heated beds are intended only for indoor use. Other variations of heated pet beds include heated cushions and mats. These are more convenient and can be easily carried around the house and plugged in wherever your pet decides he wants to snooze. A safer alternative to heated beds is heated pads, which need to be put in the microwave before being tucked into a regular pet bed.

There are several options available to provide your dog with a heated bed that will keep him warm and secure.

The Internet is certainly a very convenient place for buying pets, but before you whip out your credit cards and buy the first cuddly you see, read this first. Not all Online Pet Store are equal. Some will be able to give you all the services you need and more, while some are just out to take your money. How can you tell what online pet stores to avoid? Here are some red flags to watch out for.

Sketchy return policies. An online pet store should be willing to take the pet back if there are any problems. Do not buy from ones that refuse to do so. Read the return policy before signing up for anything, because once you agree to the terms and conditions, it will be very hard to complain.

Zero customer support. Avoid buying from online pet store that does not have consistent support facilities for pet owners. You will find it very hard to solicit important pet information, such as when to get vaccines for your pets or what types of food your pet can eat. Instead, go for stores that provide support for pet owners. If the store has an in-house vet, that’s even better!

Incomplete paperwork. Do not buy from online stores that refuse to send you the papers documenting a pet’s purebred status before or immediately after you purchase. They are probably hiding something. Some online vendors, for example, claim that their puppies are registered with an exclusive organization and promise to send you the documentation at a later date, when in fact, they never do.

High price. There’s no reason to pay loads of money for a pet when you can purchase from other online pet stores that carry the same quality pets for a lower price. Remember that just because an animal is expensive does not mean it is “better.” Some online pet stores cash in on the sudden hypes about certain breeds. Do not let them take your money – there are many other genuine, dedicated breeders who are not too concerned about profit margins. They sell healthy pets for reasonable price.

Can you really train your dog with the help of a DVD? Can you start with a squirming, wriggling, 8-week-old wild bundle of love and end up with a canine good citizen? Or can you take an untrained older dog and teach it to come, sit, stay, walk on a loose leash, and everything else you want for it to fit well into your family?

The answer is simple: It depends.

It mainly depends on you, more than on the dog. There are excellent Dog Training DVD available. Most dogs are very trainable. But will you find the time and make the effort to go through the process of training? That’s the question. If you are willing, the DVD will help you every step of the way.

All you need to do is plan a time to do short training sessions with your dog, at least a couple of times a day and preferably more. Plan it… and do it! One convenient schedule is just before you feed breakfast and dinner. Short sessions are best, as they are more fun and the dogs learn better from several short bits of training than from one long session.

If you are able to make a plan and pretty much stick to it, you can most likely train your dog from a DVD.

DVD or Class?

Should you train your dog with a DVD or should you take him to a class? Again, the answer is that it depends. The first question regarding a class is whether there are good trainers teaching near you. Dog training methods have been changing tremendously in recent years, and your dog will learn best if you find someone who uses positive reinforcement.

If you find a class that you and the dog can attend regularly, that is an excellent choice. There is a regular discipline involved, of turning up for at least most of the classes and doing the homework between sessions. Your dog will be around other dogs, though you will still need to do more socialization in any case.

You still might want to use a DVD, before the class sessions start or after they are over. Dog training becomes more and more fun the more the dog knows, so you may develop a taste for teaching tricks and more advanced behaviors.

Choosing a DVD

The best dog training DVD that I have found for learning the basics of come, sit, stay, down, etc., is Train Your Dog >with Nicole Wilde and Laura Bourhenne. It also covers house training, crate training, other puppy training topics, and more. It is very economically priced. If you don’t fancy doing training alone, watch the program with other family members or friends and you can all get involved!

An Electronic Dog Fence is not necessarily a panacea for the problem of the wandering dog or a substitute for teaching your dog to come on command and other training, but if used correctly it can be the right tool for reinforcing and reminding a dog where the boundaries are.

What is an electronic dog containment fence and how does it work? It is a management device or system used to contain and control a dog who is easily lured from his own yard by passing dogs, people, cars, etc. These systems consist of an underground wire buried a few inches deep and running around the periphery of the property. The dog wears a collar that receives a signal from the wire if approached too closely and delivers a mild shock, vibration, sound, or disagreeable spray which ideally conditions the dog to avoid getting too near the boundary.

So what are the negatives of using an electronic collar/fence dog containment system?

First of all electronic dog fences can be quite costly.

When used as an alternative for hands-on dog training, positive results may be limited.
If the dog does not immediately understand the cause and effect relationship of receiving a negative stimulus as he approaches the boundary, the use of additional negative reinforcement such as a firm NO or a quick jerk on a long lead may be necessary until it is clear that he understands.

Aggressive, highly excitable, or slow-to-learn dogs may be so intent on chasing after a squirrel or another dog that they bolt right through the shock zone, and, once on the other side and possibly trying to return home are reluctant to cross back over the boundary. There is also the possibility of another dog entering and attacking your dog.

There is the remote chance that an electronic underground dog fence could be struck by lightening and shorted out so it’s important to test the system after a passing storm. There is also the possibility that haphazard digging could cut the wire and disrupt the system.

Some believe that an electric shock is inhumane form of negative reinforcement, but this has to be weighed against the possibility of real harm or possibly death if a dog is hit by a car or gets into some other form of trouble.

electric dog fence

Some of the positive reasons to use an electronic dog fence include the fact that there are city zoning laws and development association rules in some areas which prohibit the construction of typical fences. An underground electronic dog containment fence may be the only alternative that will allow your dog the freedom to romp in the yard, clearly very important to his health and mental well being. This is especially true if there are no local dog parks or other areas where he can be exercised.

Installation of an electronic dog fence can encompass a much larger area at considerably less cost then a regular above ground fence. In fact some systems are designed to contain up to 25 acres. A regular fence would have to be quite substantial and high enough to contain the larger breeds, and there is always the possibility of a dog digging underneath it to escape.

If used in conjunction with regular dog obedience training and common sense, and considering your dog’s personality, demeanor, and your local circumstances, an electronic dog fence may be the right choice for you.

Teaching Your Dog Basic Obedience and Breaking Bad Habits

Having a pet means having to provide for the pet’s safety. But, that is not all a pet owner is obligated to do. People, mainly neighbors, do not appreciate noisy animals or animals that provide any type of nuisance to them. Basically, the neighbors don’t want someone else’s pet to interfere in any way with their lives. It is the pet owner’s responsibility to ensure this. One method for training animals to obey is by using Dog Training Collars.

While there are many types of training collars for dogs, the main goal of any of them is to ensure that the pet follows the rules. Like any creature, learning the rules takes practice. Dog training collars allow pet owners to teach their pets which behaviors are acceptable and which are not. Dog training collars provide this service to the pet owner.

There are many types of dog training collars on the market. Each provides its own methods and outcomes. Some dog training collars use electric shock to discipline an animal behaving in an improper manner. One way pet owners can communicate with their pet is to use a training collar that causes as small amount of discomfort to the animal. Although they sound harsh, the reality is that they are basically harmless to the animal. Dog training collars such as these help show the animal that they will be punished for doing something bad.

A dog training collar that teaches a dog to obey and respect their owners is the ultimate goal. The point behind dog training collars is not to hurt an animal, but to teach it the correct behaviors. Pet owners will develop their own decision whether or not dog training collars are appropriate for their pet. But, one way or another they must find a way to communicate to the dog that certain behaviors are not okay. Often times, dog training collars are an enormous help to pet owners.

The Pet Health Care available today in the country for pets is varied and very up-to-date. Most veterinarians operate in a backdrop of chrome and glass, with the latest hi-tech gadgets, and offer the latest procedures.

Intestinal parasites are a common affliction. Pets have a tendency to get infected so a course of prevention once or twice every year would be a good idea. A fecal check quickly determines whether your pet is infected or not. The most common worms are tapeworms, whipworms, roundworms, and hookworms. One sign that your pet is infected is a change in behavior – he could stop eating, have loose motions, or maybe just look poorly. Once the type of worm has been identified, specific treatment can begin immediately.

Pets could also be infected with toxoplasmosis, giardiasis, or amebiosis. These abdominal afflictions could be very weakening. A cause for concern could be salmonella, strep throat, cat scratch fever, or scabies, as these could be transmitted to humans as well. Sometimes, both pets and owners need to be treated together to prevent recurrence.

Yet another area that needs looking into is dental care. More than three-fourths of the dog and cat pet population have infected teeth by the age of three. Unfortunately, dental disease can lead to life-threatening diseases of the lungs, heart, and kidney. At pet dental clinics, veterinarians do oral examinations as well as cleanings, and a host of services are provided to ensure your pet’s teeth stay in peak condition from treating periodontal disease to surgery after making sure your pet is fine with the anesthetic procedures and from scaling and polishing to fluoride treatment and barrier sealants.

Available in the market today is a host of products for every conceivable ailment your pet could have from energy-boosting tonics and glucobalance capsules to pining and grief formula and gas prevention. There are remedies for the heart, the liver, muscles, joints, and circulation.

To ensure that your pet gets the best in healthcare make sure he has the best insurance plan going. Like you, he’s going to need it in today’s new-age healthcare environment.

People have resorted to alternative medicines to cure diseases. Alternative medicine is based on philosophies and beliefs. It involves religion, untested practices, spiritual and pre-modern medical practices. These practices are not adopted in the mainstream of medicine, hence the term alternative medicine. Pet owners who believe in its effectiveness practice alternative medicine for pets.

There is a difference if your pet is a cat, dog, horse, etc. and sources for alternative Medicine for Pets are usually divided into these general classifications. Alternative medicine realizes the fact that animals have different systems, needs and lifestyles.

Alternative medicine stresses a healthy lifestyle. A healthy lifestyle includes getting enough rest, eating right, exercising, having enough mental stimulation etc. These are general points in alternative medicine.

Animals need exercise! It is better if owners walk with their animals because it’s like hitting two birds with one stone! Animals and owners get exercise and promote pet-owner bonding. Exercise erases the boredom out of the animal’s life. Pet toys also give pets the mental stimulation that they need. Part of alternative medicine for pets is to feed pets with healthy food. This means less of processed pet food, raw and fibrous food. Cheaper food brands can contain a lot of calories and not enough nutrients. Clean water should always be provided for your pets.

Alternative medicine for pets focuses on the pet’s other aspects in life such as sleeping. Pets generally spend much of their lives sleeping. According to Dr. Kamen, a writer about chiropractic and dogs, dogs need comfortable cushions that provide them support. Just like humans, pets experience stress and stress causes harmful effects on the animal.

Fleas and ticks are unavoidable when one has pets. Companies sell commercial solutions for these problems. Alternative medicines for pets look for other ways in dealing with this situation. Some pet owners use garlic and brewer’s yeast to ward of fleas and ticks. To prevent infestation, pet owners should groom their pets properly. Fleas are caught using fine tooth combs and the rest of the house is sprayed with pyrethrin. Pyrethrin is a natural insecticide that is derived from the daisy family.

Some owners do more than these, they bring their pets for acupuncture, aromatherapy, chiropractors, herbal baths etc. as part of the alternative medicine for pets. Pets are given vitamins and food supplements to help them cope with allergies.

Alternative medicine for pets’ practitioners recognizes the fact that it is difficult to provide pets with perfect environments. Humans can only guess and try to draw logical conclusions as to what is ultimately best for pets since pets cannot speak the same language as we do. It is always better to prepare for the worst and do as much as you can for your pets.

A Patio Pet Door may be your best pet door solution, if you do not want to make a hole in a wall or door. In addition, there is no need to adjust the sliding glass door frame to install this door. A patio pet door is a handy dog door that frees dog owners from the need to cut, resize, or refit a wall or door.

A patio pet door makes use of a big and transparent pane fitting correctly in the existing patio door outline. This is a flexible pet door, which your dog may use to enter or exit from the house.

Hence, it is possible for you to install a patio dog door to any of the existing doors, as the complete unit fits inside the door, to become a section of the door itself, with a fully mechanical system.

Some advantages of Patio pet doors are:

1. They are easy to install without hampering existing construction.

2. Another advantage is portability, as these doors are removable.

Categories of Patio Dog Doors:

There are two categories of patio pet doors:

1. Temporary Dog Doors

2. Semi-permanent Dog Doors

Temporary Dog Doors

It is easy to install these patio dog doors. You can remove them easily from your patio door frame too. Such doors are useful for dog owners who either does not wish to have a dog door accessible every time or are worried about security when they travel.

Semi-Permanent Dog Doors

These doors come with a lock unit, which fits totally into your patio door frame. You need to screw the door in place. These patio dog doors are also completely removable.

Both these doors, semi-permanent and temporary dog doors come with automatic door lock or manual door lock options. On the other hand, it is vital that the pet door you buy attunes with your dog as well as your patio door frame.

Patio pet doors come in a variety of sizes, since patio doors come in a variety of sizes. Therefore, it is very important for you to measure your patio door from bottom to top and on its track. Also measure the height of your dog before going to purchase the door, as the opening comes in various sizes. A dog should be able to fit through the opening comfortably.

By doing this, you will know the correct height of patio dog door that your door opening can hold. These measurements will also help you to pick a patio pet door with a modifiable height.

You can usually find a Patio Pet Door at your local hardware store or a large home improvement store, such as Home Depot or Lowe’s. You can also search online for more information and sources for your Patio Pet Door.

Owning a pet is a huge commitment, especially if you work full or part time and have to dash home when you can to allow your pet to go outside.

At some point you would have been annoyed of frustrated with your pet because you have just sat down and got comfortable and your pet is at your feet wining to go out

The answer to these problems is simple – a pet door, owning a pet door will not only allow your pet to have the freedom of coming in and out side as and when she pleases it will also protect your walls, carpets, floors and furniture from the scratching pets sometimes do when they want to go outside.

The best way to determine what pet door suits you is to measure your pets height and width, this will give you the right measurements to need to purchase a pet door that your pet can actually fit through. You will also need to know the thickness of the door that it will be attached to. Armed with this information you won’t go wrong.

Installation of a pet door can sometimes be tricky, all pet doors should come with full installation instructions and it is important to follow the steps properly. Alternatively if this is something that you do find difficult then you could always get someone in to for the door for you. This should not take long and should not be too expensive.

There are many types of pet doors available that vary in size, shape, colour and price, most people think of a flap type door when thinking of a pet door, however the electronic pet door is becoming more and more popular.

Some of the advantages of having an electronic pet door are as follows -

An electronic pet door is operated by a signal that comes from your pets collar, this means the door will only open for your pet, this will stop other animals and strays from entering your home.

Because the electronic pet door only opens when your pet sets off the signal it will remain closed unlike a flap door, this will reduce loss of heating or air conditioning.

An electronic pet door is considered safer than a flap, anyone can push things through a flap door where as an electronic pet door will remain sealed and closed.

Once you have researched and installed your pet door you will need to encourage your pet to actually use it, as will all new things your pet probably won’t understand what it is for at first. Never push your pet through the pet door to show her how it works, this could scare your pet and they may never use it again Try to gently encourage your pet to go through, stand the other side with a treat and gently persuade her to come through, be patient, they may not go through for a while and it is important not to put them off.

When your pet finally does go thought the pet door, remember to reward them and make it fun, this way your pet will be happy to use the door and you can both enjoy the benefits.
