By adopting a “shelter” or “rescue” animal, you are giving an animal a second chance, and maybe it’s last chance. Overcrowding and lack of resources results in many of these cats and kittens being euthanized.

You can also help to keep the pet population in check by adopting a “pre-owned” animal. Before you go to the shelter or call a rescue group, you should have some ideas of what you are looking for in a cat or kitten. Are you willing to groom a longhaired cat as often as required? Are you sure no one in your household is allergic to cats?

Is this your first dog or cat? If so, you may want to talk to other pet owners to be sure you have a realistic idea of what you are getting yourself into. Remember that this is a long-term commitment, as much as 20 years for a cat! Look hard at your budget before deciding on a new pet. Don’t forget food, vet expense, possible boarding or pet sitting, groomers, kitty litter, etc.

If you are adding to a household of pets, consider the ones you already have. Will they accept another animal? Most dogs and cats can learn to live with each other eventually, but some will have a harder time adjusting than others. Some cats do not tolerate other cats well. Planning ahead for the introductions and potential problems will ease the way considerably.
If you are renting, are pets allowed? Are you planning to move in the near future? Consider your lifestyle, your habits and your home. Once you are sure that you are ready to adopt a kitten, and then you can consider the individual animal you would prefer?”

My favorite breed of cat is the “domestic shorthair”, a catch-all term for mixed breed cats. Really, unless you are looking to show or breed the animal, there is really no reason to choose a purebred cat.

Mixed breed cats tend to be healthier. Since most genetic anomalies and predispositions to disease are carried on recessive genes, mixed breeds will be less likely to inherit these traits. Often times you get the best of both worlds – or at least the best of both breeds. The animals will usually exhibit the most predominant traits of their breeds so knowing something about the different breeds will tell you something about the animal you are considering. Most breeds of cats differ only in physical characteristics, personalities are not determined by breed. Siamese, for example, are known for their vocalizations.

If you have your heart set on a specific breed, and you have done your research and know that the breed is right for you and your lifestyle, then you might want to consider looking for a rescue group for that breed. The internet is a good resource for finding a rescue group in your area.

When visiting a shelter, remember that cats are usually much more timid than dogs, and are often frightened by large, noisy spaces. Their behavior at the shelter is a response to their environment. They may seem frightened, shy or depressed. Talk to the shelter personnel, find out as much as you can about the cat’s normal behavior.

Once the kitten has adapted to its new home it should shed its fear and anxiety. Hopefully they will turn out to be the perfect cat or kitten for you. And don’t forget to have them spayed or neutered!

Dog Ramp

Before you start, consider the following:

• How big and how heavy is your dog?
• How often will you need to move the ramp?
• How wide do you want your ramp to be?
• Is there a chance that humans will use the ramp too?
• How many ramps will you need?

For a dog or humans over 100 lbs, you may need 3/8 or 1/2 inch plywood; otherwise you can use 1/4 inch plywood.
If the ramp is to be moved frequently, you will most likely want as light a ramp as possible. The recommended width is between 16 and 24 inches.

MATERIALS NEEDED

• Plywood (for length see Instructions below)
• Indoor-outdoor carpeting to cover one side of the plywood
• 4 strips of wooden lathe, each piece as long as the ramp’s width
• Wood or drywall screws

INSTRUCTIONS

• Measure the distance from the top of the stairs to the bottom
• Add 4 inches
• This will determine the length of the plywood and carpeting
• Cut the plywood
• Staple or glue the carpeting to the top side of the plywood
• Starting from the bottom, screw the lathe crosswise over the carpeting at regular intervals, for example every 10 or 12 inches
• Place the ramp over the steps and let your dog try it
• If the ramp is too steep, add another two feet of plywood and try again (screw a piece of board underneath the two sections to join them)
• Once your dog can use the ramp, move it to where you want it, then anchor the top end to the stairs with screws or nails
• Make sure nothing pokes out to hurt your dog’s paws
• If your steps are made of cement, use concrete anchors or concrete nails for fastening

Congratulations, that’s all there is to building a Dog Ramp out of plywood!

Why You Need to Keep Your Dog Dry

Dogs are warm blooded, which means that they can easily adapt to the temperature of their environment. When the weather gets too hot, they simply have to pant to release the extra heat. When the weather gets too cold, they have their fur to provide them insulation.

However, if they are exposed for a long time to cold weather, such as when you’re on a walk or on a trip, their body temperature eventually drops. It can worsen when the dog is very wet. When this happens, hypothermia may occur, where blood sugar goes down, and he starts to chill.

What to Wear on a Rainy Day

Fortunately, there is a variety of fashionable and totally hip rain gear that your Dog Can Wear out.

Vinyl Rain Jackets. The nice thing about vinyl is that it allows water to slide right off. It doesn’t allow moisture inside the rain jacket, which, in turn, will keep your dog warm at all times. They may also come with a drawstring hood, so you can also protect the head and the neck. Some varieties also have an opening to allow the dog leash to pass through. Furthermore, it allows you to find your dog easily if it strays and the surroundings are already dark.

Trench Coats. Trench coats are really classy and truly add elegance and sophistication to your pooch. It’s the most perfect rainy day apparel if ever you need to attend parties, and you want to keep his tux or polo shirt dry underneath. For the female dogs, vintage trench coats are the in thing. They come in various flattering colors.

There are 2 categories of pet feeders. Mechanical feeder and automated feeder.

Mechanical feeder is simple pet feeder that is based on the laws of gravity. They are composed of a food storage bin or tower, and a dish. Once the level of food in the dish is below a certain level, more food will fill up the dish from the hopper (storage bin). As such, food is always available to the pet, which can consume as much as it wants to.

Automated feeders can be automatic dishes or automatic food dispensers.

Automatic dishes are composed of covered compartments that the pet owner puts food in. At a preset time, the dish will open one of the compartments, giving the pet access to food.

Automatic food dispensers are, like mechanical dishes, composed of the hopper and the dish. The “automated” section is composed of a timer, and often a measurer. As such measured portions of food are dispensed to the pet at preset times.

The ideal pet feeder should be suited to your pets needs. As such the pet’s size, age, temperament and feeding habits should bear consideration. The number of household pets is also important. You might need a feeder with multiple dishes, or more than one feeder.

Further, the ideal pet feeder should pass some tests in utility. It should be rugged and durable; easy to assemble and use; affordable; easy and affordable to maintain; easy to clean; pet proof (the hopper); spill proof; should have a battery back-up if a plug-in; attractive, unobtrusive and manageable.

A word of caution. These devices cannot substitute for human contact. If you will be away for an extended period of time, pet feeders should be combined with a house or pet sitter, or somebody to check up on the pet.

The best gift you could give to anyone – or to yourself – is a pet. Pets not only keep you company and keep you amused — they also manage to bring out your tender and loving side.

And the first step to finding your perfect pet is to visit a pet store. Be very selective, though, because not all pet stores can give you the service and support you need. Below are the features you should look for:

A clean, odor-free and spacious facility. Never buy from Pet Stores that ‘overcrowd’ their pets. You want to buy animals that were raised in a healthy, hygienic and roomy facility to make sure that they do not carry any diseases.

A large, well stocked supply of items that pets (and pet owners) need. Look for a pet store that is a one-stop-shop. You want to step in there are be able to buy everything you need, from pet food to leashes to anti-flea powders. The store should likewise have a consumer-oriented return policy on supplies, and provide a good ‘warranty’ on pets.

Convenient location and business hours. For someone with a very busy schedule, these considerations are very important. Is the store still open when you get off work and during weekends? Is it located near where you live, or is at least on the way from where you work? You need a pet store that you can easily get to in case of pet emergencies.

Veterinary care whenever possible. The pet store does not need to have an in-house veterinarian (although that would be a plus), but it should at least have affiliations with local vets so that it can easily refer your pet when it needs medical assistance.

Just a reminder: Remember that it is very easy to buy a pet. But buying a pet is one thing, and raising it in your home as part of your family is another. Be sure that you are buying a pet for the right reasons.

Clippers

Clippers are an essential component in your grooming kit. A good clipper will make short work of keeping your pet’s coat neat and tidy. When cutting a pet’s hair you must use clippers designed for use on animals. Because of differences in the hair, human hair clippers are not a good substitute. Specialized hair clippers for pets can range from $50 to $100, but are necessary if you are going to cut pet hair. The leading brand of clippers is Andis. Scissors are used for cutting excess hair in hard to reach or sensitive areas.

Dog Brushes

Brushes, as with clippers, are specialized for animals and should not be replaced by human brushes. Dog brushes are rather simple tools, used to shape or style your pooch’s hair. You’ll want to choose a brush that is best for your pet’s coat. The choices include:

• Bristle brushes for most hair types and vary from soft to firm bristles.
• Wire pin brushes for breeds with medium to long hair lengths.
• Slicker brushes are perfect for medium or long-haired breeds with tangles or mats.
• Rakes are brushes used for bad tangles and mats that can’t be removed by the slicker brush.
• Shedding brushes are tools that have specialized teeth to remove excess hair and undercoat.
• Flea combs are simple combs that help make fleas more visible and pull them from your pet’s undercoat.

Shampoo

There are almost as many dog shampoos as there are human shampoos! Keep these guidelines in mind when picking a shampoo for your pet.

• Tear free shampoos are useful when trying to protect your pooch’s eyes from harmful chemicals in normal shampoos.
• Oatmeal shampoos soothe irritated skin.
• Natural shampoos are a chemical-free alternative.
• Medicated shampoos are prescribed by a veterinarian for pets with special care needs.

Nail Clippers

Keeping your pet’s nails trimmed is important for their health and comfort. There are three main types on the market. Which you choose is really a matter of preference.

• Claw-style trimmers are used to cut nails with a scissor-like fashion.
• Scissor-like trimmers are used for smaller breeds with delicate nails.
• Filing tools grind the nails to provide a nice smooth edge.

Many pet owners use a Dremel to file down their pet’s nails. This tool makes short work of the nail, and is said to be more comfortable for the pet. You just need to be careful with it, as it can easily go too far if you aren’t paying attention.

One more useful item is a hair dryer. If your pet is a larger breed, you are better off buying a specialized animal hair dryer. The amount and thickness of the coat could burn out your regular hair dryer. You should be able to use your regular hair dryer on smaller breeds without any difficulty. In a pinch, a towel will do the job, but the undercoat will have to air-dry before you can cut it.

Learning the basics of home dog grooming isn’t as hard as you think, as long as you have the right tools. It will bring you closer to your pet, and save you some money in the process.

Pros & Cons of a Harness or Collar

Dog Training

Dog walking is a great way to get fit and share time with your pet dog, providing it is fun and easy. But, who’s walking who? If your dog is walking you, then take action to rectify the situation. It’s never too late, no matter what age your dog is, although puppy training is the ideal starting time.

Dog training can be frustrating, but it doesn’t have to be! You don’t have to become a dog obedience expert to train your dog. Most pet owners do not have the time or desire to become dog trainers, nor do they need to have a highly trained pet.

By following a few simple suggestions you can have a happy, well behaved, leash trained dog that can be taken anywhere by anyone.

FIRSTLY; you must be the Pack Leader and set clear expectations in your own mind, and then be consistent. Be fair and realistic in the beginning with what it is you expect, your dog needs to learn. Learning must be a positive building block process.

Now you have the right mindset 90% of your training job is done, the rest is easy, your dog will pick up on the new you and adjust accordingly. Sure, there might be some resistance at first but, providing you stick it out your dog will find comfort in the boundaries you’ve established – it’s like they can read your mind. If you come from a place of passive persistence, with a kind but assertive attitude you’ll win the game and their trust.

SECONDLY; you need an effective walking and training device.

No training tool is a solution on its own; without you firstly having the right mindset and the willingness to help your dog to learn, no tool will work.

There is no place for any training device that causes pain or potential damage to your dog, no justification or need, ever, for the use of such tools. I can personally assure you of this, from years of careful observation and experience. Use your good judgment and commonsense when making the choice of a training or walking device, your dog is relying on you.

There are basically two categories of walking – training aids available:-

**Head & Neck Area Products – these include devices such as collars and leads, choker chains, muzzle harness, etc. These devices rely on trying to control the dog by using the sensitive and vulnerable neck area, where vital structures such as the airway and spinal cord are interfered with.

They claim to use the principle of comfort vs discomfort however; there is a fine line here, it is more like the outdated method of ‘train by pain’. As with any training tool, used properly by experienced trainers they can be effective however, in my opinion they are definitely not for the average dog owner or child to use, they can and do cause pain and distress. Just look around, you don’t have to go far to see gagging dogs at the end of choker chains and leads, dragging their handlers all over the place.

**Body Harness Products – of which there are two main types, a Fixed Position Body Harness or a Slip Action Body Harness.

The least harmful of all the dog walking products is probably the Fixed Position Body Harness however; this style of harness does not provide any real avenue of training or communication. The dog can use his weight, without any discomfort, to pull against you. This style is only suitable for small breeds, quiet, older or trained dogs.

In my opinion, the most effective and kindest of all the training devices we have tested is the other type of body harness; the Slip Action style, which works on the principle of ‘give and take’, the same as the choker chain but, of course, without the risk of causing damage to sensitive vital structures.

Of the Slip Action style body harnesses there are currently two types I know of, both are good communication and control devices however, one is made using cord, which can be quite severe and cause pain and bruising to soft tissue areas.

The other type of Slip Action harness available is made of soft, flat nylon webbing which doesn’t cause pain or damage, no matter how inexperienced the handler is or how much the dog might pull against it – it is safe for the dog in any hands, as well as providing an excellent degree of control for the handler at the same time. It also converts easily, from a Slip Action training and control harness to a Fixed Position body harness, so it is actually a combination of both styles of harness in one.

Dog Pen

Pet exercise is very important. Your dog needs a space in which to romp. With exercise pens, your dog has the opportunity to romp around without having the chance to escape and run amuck in the neighbor’s flowerbed.

Exercise Pens-What Are They?
These pens, also known as Dog Pens, are fences that allow your dog a safe place for your dog to exercise and play. Portable exercise pens are available. These consist of portable fencing made of heavy gauge wire formed into eight hinged panels. The hinges make the exercise pen easy to put away or transport.

Dog pens come in sizes ranging from 24 to 48 inches in height, and are typically 16 feet in length. Exercise pens are also available with soft sides constructed of canvas and mesh. These weigh less and are more portable, but if your dog is rambunctious or tends to chew they are far mare easily destroyed than the metal dog pens.

Exercise pens can be used indoors or outdoors. Dogs are territorial, and so will be quite comfortable with the notion that the pen is their area. The hinges allow you to configure exercise pens into just about any size and shape you choose. You can also use it as a gate or barrier if you want to keep your dog in a particular part of a fenced-in yard, or keep the dog in the house or garage.

Exercise Pens and Training
One of the best ways to encourage and maintain your dog’s good behavior is to manage his or her environment. These pens are good tools for doing this. You can create a comfortable and familiar environment for your dog when you are not there to watch over and train him or her, or just cannot devote your full attention to your dog.

Travel and Portability
Dogs can be great fun to travel with, if you are well prepared. Taking a dog pen along with you on your trip will give your dog a secure place to relax no matter where you are, without having to tie your dog up all the time. Dogs prefer exercise pens to being tied up.

Dogs are easily unsettled by unfamiliar surroundings. This can cause the dog to behave inappropriately. For example, the dog may be tempted to urinate on furniture or decorative items, or chew on furniture and fixtures-particularly awkward if you’re staying at someone else’s house. Spacious pens with a familiar soft blanket and chewable toys can be a welcome place to rest for your dog. Knowing your dog is relaxing will ease your mind as well.

Housetraining Applications
Exercise pens can be tremendously useful in housebreaking your dog. It will allow you to use a box or piddle pad, or keep your dog in a limited space until you can take him or her outside. If the dog perceives the space as his own, he may be less inclined to soil it. You will, however, need to remember to take your dog outside frequently to do his business.

Other Uses for Exercise Pens
Pens are used at dog shows to keep the participants safe, happy and separate from each other until it is their turn to tour the ring. They are also used to keep your dog confined to a limited area of your house or yard after your dog has returned home from surgery. A dog that has been recently operated on should not be allowed to roam free, but rather must remain where you can closely observe him.

Other Considerations
While your dog’s pen is useful for keeping your dog at select times, they are not intended to be a place where the dog can stay indefinitely. In spite of the name you’ll want to take your dog out of the pen and let him get some real exercise.

You can acclimate your dog to the pen the same way you would to a crate: feed him in the pen, do not leave him alone in the pen until he’s used to it. Don’t leave his collar on when he’s in the pen, for his own safety.

Bombay Cat

A shorthair felid, Bombay cat was created in nineteen fifties in United States through crossing of American Shorthairs with Burmese cats. The idea was to creature a small Indian ‘black panther’. After a number of attempts, finally an all black cat was developed that would consistently produce black colored kittens with ‘copper penny’ eyes. It was named ‘Bombay’ after the famous Indian coastal town of the same name. It took a further two decades for the cat to be formally recognized. The modern Bombay Cats shares majority of its attributes with the Burmese since American Shorthairs are no longer used in the periodic out crossing of the breed.

A lithe yet muscular cat, Bombay cats is surprisingly heavy for its appearance. It has a medium slender physique with a shiny coat. Head is well rounded with gold to copper colored circular eyes and slightly tilted ears. Both the eyes and ears are big and widely set. Muzzle is short with a minimal nose break. Legs are long with round paws. Tail is medium in length. The highlighting feature of the Bombay cats is its stunning lustrous coat. It is short and closes lying and yet has an unparalleled shine. It is black throughout, including at its roots. Sable colored kittens are often born in litters, though they are not formally recognized by cat fancies.

Some Bombay cats share a hereditary skull disorder with the Burmese in their lines. The result is an abnormal craniofacial presentation in kittens that are unable to survive and thus have to be euthanized at birth. This is an issue of some controversy around breeders today of the traditional Bombay cats and Burmese cats.

Affectionate and calm, Bombay cats are famous for being total lap cats. They follow their humans around everywhere and try to supervise all their activities. They are outgoing and active cats and keep themselves and their companions busy. Temperamentally they are quite good. Bombay cats readily accept other pets, particularly dogs, into their household. They are cool with children and are social cats in general.

On this site you will not only be able to search through the cats that are up for adoption from them but you will also be able to contact adoption groups in your area and see the pets that they have in their shelters. Like many other sites you will be able to learn a lot about the care of your new pet and they offer advice when it comes to adopting. You will find out what will be expected of you as a new parent to a cat or a kitten and what you can expect in the way of problems when it comes to your new charge settling in.

Another of the cat adoption links that is available on the site is that of Pet911 dot com, which is similar to Petfinder in that it will go on to link you with other more local shelters and give advice. Both of these sites also have the facility to put you in touch with other pet owners in your area so that you can become part of a community of like minded people and meet and make new friends with the common interest of your pets. You can join clubs and there are even ‘fun’ pages.

If you are interested in a broader, worldwide picture, the Humane Society gives cat adoption links to such organizations as worldanimalnet dot org. On this site you can find out about pet adoption all over the world as well as news regarding other animal welfare matters. It is very interesting to find out what is happening in other parts of the world with regard to animal adoptions etc.

There are many cat adoption links on the internet and it is possible to spend hours jumping from one website to another. There is much to be learned and a lot of information at your fingertips. There is bound to be the ideal pet for you in one of the many shelters in your area and it you start somewhere like the Humane Society of America you will soon find a link that is suitable for you.

The most lifting you have to do will be the ramp. A dog car ramp or dog boat ramp is designed to weigh as little as possible, usually 30 lbs or less.

Besides the weight of the ramp, there are three other things to be concerned about:

• Will it create a gentle enough slope for my dog?
• Will it fit in my car or boat?
• How can I afford it?

What Length Ramp Should I Get?

Some dog car ramps are made out of one piece of board or metal 4 to 5 feet long. These shorter ramps can be used for side entry into a vehicle, where the height from the ground is not that great. This type of ramp may be difficult to store in some vehicles and may be best suited for short trips where your dog does not get out of the car. You can leave the ramp at home close to your driveway or in your garage.

Many dog ramps for cars or boats are around 70 inches long or almost 6 feet long, creating a reasonable slope for most dogs to negotiate. If your dog has a lot of difficulty with walking, there are a few extra long ramps that are 7 feet or 84 inches long. These ramps fold up (see below) to make them easy to carry and stow.

Will It Fit In My Vehicle Or Boat?

All the longer ramps are designed to fold up or slide inward (telescope) to at least half their length. That means the folded length is between 35 and 42 inches, which allows these types of ramps to fit in most vehicles or boats. They ramps are fully portable, therefore suitable for longer trips where your dog needs to get in and out away from home. There is also one called a tri-fold that has two folds.

Can I Afford It?

Commercial dog car ramps for bigger dogs tend to cost around USD 100 or more at this time, whether you buy them in a pet store or online. Shipping costs are usually at least USD 25, so even if the ramp costs USD 70, the total is still at least $95.

If you are good at finding recycled or scrap materials, the only thing you may need to buy are the hinges! Many lumber and hardware stores have scrapped wood bins where you can get free plywood and lumber pieces. Often someone buys a sheet of ply board or length of lumber and asks a store clerk to cut it for them. If they do not want the remaining pieces, they are placed in the free bin.

Whatever type of dog car ramp you choose, it is bound to be worth your investment by giving you peace of mind about your dog and your health!
